Name:
Barbara Mayer

Grade:
2nd Grade

Education:
Sacred Heart University, BA- English Major with a Minor in Elementary Education.
Fairfield University, MA- Elementary Education.

Building upon basic skills taught in first grade, the second grade curriculum consist of religion, language arts, math, social studies,  science, music, computer and gym. These are all taught in a traditional classroom setting. Some highlights of grade 2 are the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, an introduction to cursive writing, and adding and subtracting with regrouping in math.  Much emphasis is placed on reading and writing.  Students discuss story elements, compare and contrast stories and develop other strategies for comprehension during reading.  Second graders work toward  writing a paragraph with a topic sentence and a few detail sentences.  About a half hour of homework is given each week night to reinforce what has been taught in school that day.  Parents receive weekly packets of the students work in class. Believing that the parents and teachers should work together in the child’s education, I’m always available for a mutually convenient conference.
