Kindergarten Program
Full Day Program
St. Jude Kindergarten is a full day, academic program whose curriculum includes Religion, the interrelated Language Arts of Reading, Phonics, Creative Writing, Handwriting, and Math. These subjects are taught by the classroom teacher assisted by a full time aide. Rounding out the program are Art, Computer, Music, Library, and Physical Education, which are taught by other staff members.
Field trips both on and off campus give the students common topics for writing and discussion as well as stretching their experience base.
Our Kindergarten students participate in the Religious, Social, and Cultural life of our school by attending Mass and Prayer Services with our eighth grade Prayer Buddies; performing in the Christmas Pageant and Spring Concert, cheering the teams at Pep Rallies, attending assemblies and enjoying the Thanksgiving Feast.
Our major topics include:
Religion –prayer, God loves us, we love God, Families, Church, Celebrations, Liturgical Seasons, creation, Saints, and Bible stories.
Math –directionality, sorting, patterns, recognizing and ordering numbers 0 to 20, exploring addition and subtraction, value of pennies, nickels and dimes, graphing, measurement, time, sequence of events, geometry, 2 and 3 dimensional shapes.
Language Arts -concepts of print, parts of a story, phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, vocabulary and high frequency words, comprehension, literary responses, writing, listening and speaking.
Lessons are conducted in whole group, small group and individual formats and are interspersed with snack, lunch, Kindergarten playtime, primary recess, rest, exercise, and rest room breaks and specials.
Our students wear uniforms and eat morning snack in our room where we can celebrate birthdays. Lunch is enjoyed in the cafeteria.
Parents are kept informed of school and Kindergarten happenings via a school newsletter, weekly family packets and a Dear Kindergarten Families letter.
Student’s progress is reported to parents through daily work papers, Progress Reports, Report Cards and conferences.
